Brick houses, hot summers, and ductwork that came later

St. Louis has some of the oldest housing in the region: brick single-family homes, two-family flats and bungalows built long before central heat and air. Some still heat with a boiler and radiators, and many had forced air and AC added decades later, with ducts squeezed into closets, attics and old chimney chases.

Then there's the weather: hot, humid summers and cold winters, with records running from more than 20 below zero to over 110. That range is hard on any system that's undersized, oversized or fighting restrictive ductwork, and it's why so many St. Louis comfort problems turn out to be airflow problems as much as equipment problems.

Questions from St. Louis

Do you really come across the river for service calls?

Yes. We serve St. Louis and the near suburbs from our base in Edwardsville, for repairs, tune-ups and replacements. Call (314) 420-9851 or book online and we'll confirm a time with you.

My brick house has radiators. Can I still get central air?

Often, yes. A common approach is a separate cooling system, with an air handler in the attic feeding vents in the upstairs ceilings, while the boiler keeps handling the heat. Most of the work is routing the ducts cleanly, so the right plan depends on the house.

Why is my second floor always so much hotter?

Heat rises, the roof bakes the upstairs all afternoon, and in many older homes the ducts to the second floor were added later and are too small or too long to keep up. Fixes range from sealing and balancing ducts and adding return air upstairs to a properly sized second system. We'll find which one your house needs.
