A coal town that grew into the suburbs

Glen Carbon was incorporated in 1892 and named for the coal mines that built it. The mines are long gone, and the village has grown steadily since, from about 7,700 residents in 1990 to nearly 14,000 at the 2020 census. That growth left a mix of older homes near Main Street, plenty of ranch houses, and subdivisions built in waves over the last few decades.

Homes built in the same wave tend to have equipment that ages out at the same time, so when one neighbor's furnace goes, others aren't far behind. Ranch homes have their own quirk: the rooms farthest from the furnace sit at the end of the longest duct runs, and they're the first to feel it when airflow drops.

Questions from Glen Carbon

Is Glen Carbon in your same-day area?

Yes. Glen Carbon borders Edwardsville, where we're based, so it's one of the shortest trips we make. Most repairs here are handled the same day, and we're open daily 8am to 8pm.

Why are the back bedrooms in my ranch house always too hot or too cold?

In a ranch, those rooms usually sit at the far end of the duct system, so they get whatever air is left after the rest of the house. Leaky or crushed ducts, a dirty filter, closed dampers, or too few return vents make it worse. Most of the time it's fixable with balancing and duct repair, not a new system.

Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?

Not always. If both are around 15 years old or older, replacing them together usually saves on labor compared with two separate jobs, and gets you a matched system that runs more efficiently. If one is much newer and in good shape, we'll tell you, and you can replace only what's failing.
